John
Hammond is our new featured artist! A passionate and skilled woodworker
from Charlotte, North Carolina; John has been woodworking for over twenty
years. Children’s chairs, wedding chests, and other gifts are
among some of his early projects. Self-taught, John always drew his
own designs, and then by trial and error learned how to work with cedar,
maple, oak, and cherry. Through the years, he has had the pleasure of
working with Drew Langner, participating in his workshop in the North
Carolina Mountains. There John learned to work with primitive woodworking
tools as they built chairs and tables, and learned the entire process
of woodworking, starting with splitting the wood and drying it. The
first chairs John built were for his grandchildren, patterned after
a rocking chair his children had growing up. Last year John started
woodcarving and joined the Charlotte
Woodcarvers Club. This is where he carved the bunnies in these photos.
After carving the bunnies out of the block, he uses a wood-burning tool
to create detail, and then uses paint for solid color, highlights and
dry brush detailing. John is also a member of the Woodworking Club of
Rock Hill and the York
Woodworkers Club. |
